Fall control of Annual Bluegrass

Fall control of Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua) and Japanese Stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum)

First of all, if you are not familiar with how these two invasive turf pests look, here’s a link to each: Annual Bluegrass Japanese Stiltgrass

The best and less expensive means of controlling these undesirables would be to apply a pre-emergent herbicide in the Fall, the only drawback here is that you would have to forego fall seeding if you are going after annual bluegrass since the pre-emergent herbicide would prevent any grass seed from germinating, and for the best control you would want to apply this in September, the products that you would want to use are Barricade 14-0-2 50 lb, Barricade 5-0-15 50 lb. or Barricade 5-0-15 25 lb.

This application could be substituted for one of your fall maintenance rounds. Now if you want to control Japanese Stiltgrass in the fall you would make your first application in late November with one of the products mentioned above, followed up with a second application in the Spring. You will notice a difference next spring, and the is a less expensive approach to two of the more prolific grassy weed pests, that have become quite the nuisance in home lawns.
